With a spectacular burnout, Leah Pritchett and her 1320-themed Mopar Top Fuel Dragster, helped debut the new Challenger 1320 at the Dodge Mile-High NHRA Nationals, on July 20-22, 2018, at Bandimere Speedway. (The 1320’s name comes from the length of a quarter-mile drag strip- 1,320 feet). This drag-oriented, street-legal muscle car, for the grassroots drag racer, can now be ordered from Dodge for the bargain price of $46,000 (i.e., standard 2019 Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack of $38,995, plus the 1320 Package of $3,995, plus the required 8-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission of $1,595 and the destination charge of $1,395).

This special edition “Angry Bee” Challenger is expected to run an amazing 11.7-second quarter mile at 115 mph. right out of the box. Compared to the standard Scat Pack 392 version, it’s also 0.3 seconds quicker in the quarter mile, and it’s 0.3 seconds quicker to 60 mph, taking just 3.8 seconds to hit the benchmark. This is not an over-the-top Hellcat. The excellent drag times of this 6.4 liter, 485 hp. Challenger, are made without the aid of a supercharger! This will make it the fastest naturally aspirated street-legal muscle car on the road today. Is the competition ready to get stung?

The 1320 is being offered by Dodge for the budget-minded and entry-level weekend warrior drag racer who likes his performance vehicle devoid of frivolous things and is more interested in making a fast pass at the local drag strip. "It's a special model, a buzz model," says Steve Beahm, head of passenger car brands. "We created the Challenger R/T Scat Pack 1320 for the heart of the sport- the bracket racer- who wants to drive to the track, suit up, go fast, and go home with a big smile and maybe a trophy in the trunk with minimal prep and upkeep”).

The secret to its blazing fast time, is that it uses many of the drag strip components from the top-performing Demon. Standard performance features include:

    · TorqueFlite 8HP70 eight-speed automatic transmission.

    · TransBrake- locks the output shaft of the automatic transmission to hold the car stationary before
a standing start. When it unlocks, the transmission sends full power to the rear.

    · Torque Reserve- works in conjunction with the TransBrake by managing fuel flow to cylinders
and controlling spark advance or retard to balance engine rpm and torque to maximize power
    delivery and launch performance.

    · SRT-tuned three-mode Adaptive Damping Suspension (Drag Mode).

    · Standard interior configuration has driver’s seat only to help reduce weight by approximately
114 lbs. to 4,127 lbs. (front passenger seat and rear seat are available individually as $1
    options).

    · Performance-tuned asymmetrical limited-slip differential with 3.09 final drive.

    · Beefy, extreme-duty 41-spline rear axle half-shafts.

    · Line Lock- engages the front brakes to hold the 1320 stationary, but leaves the rear wheels free
for a burnout to heat up and clean the rear tires.

    · Launch Assist- uses wheel speed sensors to watch for driveline-damaging wheel hop at launch
and, in milliseconds, modifies the engine torque to regain full grip.

    · Launch Control- controls tire slip during straight-line acceleration.

    · Cool-down features for 1320 hot-lapping.

    · Nexen SUR4G Drag Spec 275/40R20 street-legal drag radials- all-new specially developed super
sticky tires that deliver exceptional grip, with minimal burnout preparation, at the dragstrip and on
    the street.

    · Low gloss black 20 x 9.5-inch aluminum-forged wheels, with knurled bead seats to minimize tire
    slip on the wheel.

    · Brembo High-performance Brake Package with four-piston calipers.

Exterior styling details include the new Dodge Super Bee logo. Dubbed the “Angry Bee” (a new interpretation” of the Super Bee logo from the Coronet-based 1968-71 model), the logo was added to the fenders, the instrument panel, digital gauge cluster screen and in the custom light-up Air Catcher headlights.

Amazingly, the whole package remains street legal, and as a result, it comes with all the comfort stuff you’d expect, including dual-zone automatic climate control, electric power steering, a power driver’s seat, keyless entry, parking sensors, and a backup camera. The 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen in the dash also remains as-is, enabling inputs for the various digital assists (Drag Mode, Adaptive Suspension, TransBrake, etc.).

The launch model, unveiled In July, was painted “Black Eye,” - a stunning purple, to gauge interest in a potential new exterior color.

Scat Packs currently account for about 20% of Challenger volume. It is expected that this
bargain-priced drag racer will be quickly snapped up by hard-core Mopar enthusiasts. Order books opened in November and the first deliveries are expected in January 2019.
