Which muscle car era do you like best? The 1st gen era (late 60s-early 70s) or the 2nd modern era?

Granted the new cars with vastly outperform their ancestors, but there is no longer the variety that we once had. For example, we now have the Challenger, Charger, Mustang and Camaro (I didn't include the Corvette because it is a two-seat sports car). However, at 1969-the peak muscle car year- we had the following incredible choices when we went to the dealer. And, they were affordable.

    1969 AMC AMX
    1969 AMC Hurst SC/Rambler
    1969 AMC Hurst SS/AMX
    1969 Buick GS
    1969 Chevrolet Camaro COPO
    1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS
    1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28
    1969 Chevrolet Chevelle COPO
    1969 Chevrolet Chevelle SS
    1969 Chevrolet El Camino SS
    1969 Chevrolet Nova COPO
    1969 Chevrolet Nova SS
    1969 Dodge Charger 500
    1969 Dodge Charger Daytona
    1969 Dodge Charger R/T
    1969 Dodge Coronet R/T
    1969 Dodge Dart GTS
    1969 Dodge Dart Swinger
    1969 Dodge Super Bee
    1969 Ford Cobra
    1969 Ford Mustang 428 CJ
    1969 Ford Mustang Boss 302
    1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429
    1969 Ford Mustang GT

    1969 Mercury Cyclone
    1969 Mercury Cyclone CJ
    1969 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler
    1969 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II
    1969 Oldsmobile 442

I liked the first gen best because of the many choices available! I had two Plymouth Road Runner's and loved them!
Back then you could order your car like you wanted it without having a package that you might have to have just to get one thing you wanted! I also loved the fact you had many interior colors to choose from!

bac.jpg I have favorites from both but it's long been impossible to find an adequately powered, solid, affordable 1st gen. This is interesting.

Those days were great. I remember custom ordering my 72 Cuda from my dealership and it was great getting exactly what I wanted that was available.

You said you didn't include the Corvette because it is a two-seat sports car. Then why did you include the 1969 AMC AMX, this car was a two seat sports car also?

You better read the list more carefully there are as many brand "X" cars as there are mopar's in the list.... mopar or no car. :)

The 1969 L88 427 was peak Corvette until [Edit:] the DOHC version of the ZR1. The Corvette has not attained to the DOHC ZR1 since then. I found that the first ZR1 was a 350 back in 1970-1972, not the twin cam.

A mid-engine Corvette is like a FWD Challenger. Neither should ever exist.

The closest Mopar has gotten to that firebreathing L88 was the Viper ACR that held the Eurofops up by the tail and Foghorn Leghorn fence stake-whipped their asses in front of the world at the Nurburgring. Imagine carefully sipping your cappuccino a some Italian sidewalk cafe and news of some AMERICAN 8-liter car whipping all of your fragile, temperamental "super"cars in your own backyard and with a 50,000 mile warranty and easy daily driveabiity. Porsche, also, probably choked on their weinerschnitzelen when that headline was made in their FRONT yard.

Now what they call a Corvette has evidently set a NEW record that will last, I suspect, until the new Viper comes forth with its 12.7 liter supercharged DOHC V12 (about half a Rolls-Royce Merlin in size and power output)

The beauty of the wildly impractical L88 was its lack of a radio, A/C, or heater and 12.5:1 compression ratio. it was not to be confused with a street car, but was made for racing. 585hp with headers very readily available from the GM parts department. She was the wild wife you took to bed and who would leave you with torn clothes, sheets, wallpaper, and pillows, plus a knowing smile on your face, but not who you gave the task of balancing your checkbook, ever remembering to turn on the house's thermostat, or much of anything else.

The car was so RAW, a generous helping of thinly-wrapped horsepower somewhat like the 427 Shelby Cobras, with similar drag strip performance, IIRC.

The 71 ZR2 packed a wallop in the day.
