Yes, they use cell data, like everything else these days. Regarding that old radar detector, toss it in the trash. Most modern police departments use detection devices that your unit won't pick up. And finally, regarding your final comment; "don't speed, don't need", are you sure you have a Challenger? Why have one if you never speed?

My Escort saved me just saved me literally minutes ago! On the way home, I got a laser warning, which is rare. A few seconds later, there he was on the shoulder. Local cop sitting on his motorcycle sighting through his laser speed detector. And yes, I was going a few over the posted limit. Pretty much the same speed as surrounding traffic but that won't stop a ticket. Yet again, another perfect example of why I never drive without my radar detector.

I’ll never throw my old detector in the trash. It’s on the bottom of a cabinet shelf and is propping up the CB radio so it doesn’t fall off the shelf.
Don’t assume I never speed. I have the best ETA from Cleveland to Raleigh and Cleveland to NC Outer Banks out of all my family. I do the speed limit in construction zones but usually drive up to 5-7 mph over posted speed if traffic allows. Best rule I use is to never be the fastest car traveling. Been driving a lot of miles (work) for 48 years with no tickets and never been pulled over.
    Hope I didn’t jinx myself.

All I am saying is that an app like waze that has user inputs combined with a top dollar radar detector can help you avoid a ticket if you are so inclined to speed all the time. Me personally, I have a personal limit of 5 over on highways. I have given the man enought of my money. If i want to race i go to 1 of the two local drag strips. I'm not judging, sh*t, i got pulled over doing 137 mph in my chally the first year i had it by THE SHERRIF of XXX county in IL. He let me go with a 75mph ticket. I was gratefull and swore off major speeding ever since. Did i grow up? Probably lol! All i am saying is that apps like waze or google combined with a top dollar radar detector can help you avoid a ticket... But so can only doing 5 over lol!
