Would you buy a Demon 170 (#32), with only 61 miles, for $20K?

Of course you would! But, no so fast. There has to be a catch...

The catch is that the car was stolen from a Detroit dealer's lot and chopped up by thieves. Although the engine and intercooler are there, it is missing virtually everything else, including the chassis, wheels, seats, driveshaft, hood, trunk lid, windows, dashboard wiring, headlights, spoiler, air bags, etc. And, no VIN.

By the way, the insurance paid the dealer $196K for the Demon.

The buyer was Lee Carter from ScrapLifeLee- a car rebuild expert. He admits, however, that this is the worst he has ever had to deal with. I wonder how long it will take him to put this puzzle back together again?

I think that Carter got a great deal. A Demon 170 crate engine sells for $30K and just the long block for $19K. Since he has the expertise to do the work himself, he will make a killing on this car.

I was actually looking at crashed Challengers on Ebay, once you have to replace the air bags, blown out seats, and panels, it gets expensive. If I am going to build a salvage vehicle, it is going to have to be pretty close to my age.

Yeah, there’s nothing left of that car. Sell the engine and whatever other parts are still good and scrap the rest.

I'll bet you that Graveyard Carz could restore it.

Yeah, they probably could, but their business model is a little different. They get paid to do a show, so it doesn’t matter if it’s cost effective to fix the car, that’s all paid for by the advertising.

It's true that the owner, Mark Worman, probably receives big bucks for the TV show. However, that is just a sideline. He owns Welby’s Car Care in Springfield, Oregon. His primary business is restoration of MOPARS for clients.

I've seen quite a few of his videos. The buyer has rebuilt other Hellcats, but it seems like his MO is more likely to move all of the important bits to a shell of another Challenger. This would create problems in that the VIN is not likely to be a 170 vehicle and would be a significant hit on the value. I do not see how he could reasonably use the shell that he has without compromising the integrity of the car.
