Jay Leno now has a jet motorcycle. It is a custom built carbon fiber bike, with a Model 250-C18 gas turbine engine from a helicopter. It has 485 lb/ft of torque and a top speed of 266 mph. It also turns the quarter in 9 seconds. How would you like to ride this?
You're correct. The MTT Y2K jet bike was built, in 1999, by Marine Turbine Technologies. It was #2 off the assembly line. The MTT Y2K Turbine Superbike holds the Guinness World Record for the most expensive production motorcycle to ever go on sale. In 2000, it would have cost you $175,000 which is around $260,000 in today's market.
Years ago, there was a story about an Infinity whose front end partially melted because its driver pulled up too close to the bike's 1,000 F degree exhaust at a traffic light! It's not surprising that plastic would melt at that extreme temperature. Its average melting point is 500 F (range is 165 F to 600 F for different compositions). Even the following metals would melt: Aluminum Alloy- 621 F Lead- 622 F Magnesium Alloy- 660 F Tin- 449 F Zinc- 787 F Lithium- 357 F Cadium- 610 F
Never paid close attention to the exhaust system on the bike. I'd be surprised if it didn't have any kind of system or component that lowers EGT to a relatively safe level.
