How does the 1970 440 Challenger compare to a new Challenger with the base V6 engine?

68MOPAR has posted some wonderful stats about the old 426 and 440 engines of the past and how they compare equally to the 5.7 Hemi in our new Challengers. I don't think the V6 would compare as closely.

    Not STOCK
My 6.1 has 425 hp, as did my '66 426 Street Hemi I put in my '70 Challenger.

But a completely different sound, feel, and ability to work on.
I had no problem swapping Cams, intakes, Carbs, Distributors in any 383, 440, 426.

Now you have to have an Engineering Degree from MIT or PAY someone to work on them.

But the NICE thing is, you don't NEED to work on them as much.

I still miss adjusting Points and Carbs :(

So true. You could tinker toy with the older cars. The new ones are more reliable, less maintenance and don't require any backyard mechanics.

That's what I thought and the 3.6 Penstar gets better fuel economy.

The SXT wouldn't stand a chance against the 440 Six-Pack in the 1/4 mile.

    Apparently it would.

located these 1970 Challenger performance times along with sources. Keep in mind other performance tests would have returned times different from below but should be somewhere in the same ballpark.

The 3.6 is an excellent engine. A stock Challenger SXT runs the quarter in about 14.5 sec. This would beat many of the classic muscle cars but not a 440 Six-Pack that runs about 1 second quicker.
