Reactive Headrests

    Did you know about this cool safety feature? In the event of a rear end collision, the head restraints will extend forward minimizing the gap between the back of the driver's and passenger's heads to prevent whiplash?

    Any idea what years have this? I wish mine were closer to my head. If I move my head back to rest against them, it's not comfortable.

    They first appeared in 2015 Dodge vehicles. Saab had them in the 90s.

    The majority of these systems have a sensor in the lumbar region of the seat. During a rear end collision, the mass of the body acts as an 'at rest' trigger to push into this sensor, which along with the rest of the car is still in motion forward. The lower sensor then signals the upper unit to move up and forward about an inch in both vectors to counter-act the whip-lash motion of the head.
