If your car's ECU program isn't verified as legal by a California Air Resources Board (C.A.R.B.) Executive Order, it will not pass smog, regardless of its emissions output. Yikes! California Smog Testing Will Now Sniff Out (and Fail) Tuned ECUs
I read that article in a Hemmings email I get. This will be interesting to watch. Switching to the factory tune before the test and switching back, paying under the table for a "clean" test result"... Think of the guys that did new cams and other mods that would be real hard to remove. The ones I'd feel real sorry for are those that bought a car used not knowing there's a aftermarket ECU on it and find out when they are getting tested. Will going after this very low percentage of "violators" be worth their trouble and expense? Will it really make a difference in air quality?
