The Dale Earnhardt Daytona 500 death was a tragic, unique and complicated case.

There was a dispute as to whether or not the 5-point seat belt harness actually failed. A doctor pinned the death on a violent head-whip motion that shattered the base of Earnhardt's skull. Some safety advocates say such deaths are preventable with a head-and-neck-restraint device that is mandatory in some racing leagues but not (then) in NASCAR.

For full details see these two articles from the Chicago Tribune and New York Times:

Eric Medlen died while testing one of John Force's funny cars. > Wearing Seat Belts

On March 19, 2007 during a test session at Gainesville Raceway in Gainesville, Florida, Medlen was critically injured when his Funny Car developed the most severe tire shake ever recorded in a Funny Car. The side-to-side force of the shake caused his head to hit the roll bars around his head, causing severe head injuries. He became unconscious, causing the car to lose control and strike the wall.

Medlen was born in Oakdale, CA, the son of John and Mary (Mimi) Medlen and brother of Eryn Medlen. He worked as a mechanic for John Force and past teammate Tony Pedregon for 8 years until Pedregon left to join his brother Cruz's race team. Medlen was moved into Pedregon's Castrol Syntec-sponsored car. In 2004, he was a top contender for the NHRA Road to the Future Funny Car Rookie of the Year. He followed with 3 wins in 2005 and 2 wins in 2006. Each year he raced, he placed in the top five or higher in NHRA Championship Points. Prior to 2004, his fastest elapsed time was 4.681 seconds. His fastest speed was 328.54 MPH. He had 8 #1 qualifiers and a 94-65 win-loss record.
Medlen was a champion calf roper in high school and considered a career as a professional team roper with his partner and mentor, World Champion Team Roper Jerold Camarillo. He also loved to build custom motorcycles and paint his race helmets. His father John Medlen was his crew chief.

This was an unfortunate and unusual accident. Eric endured a violent, mid-strip tire shake that snapped the chassis, caused his car to slide out of control and forced his head to whip side to side about 150 times. Goodyear later said something apparently punctured the tire at high speed, causing it to lose pressure and start jerking the entire car with more than 40,000 pounds of force.

As a result of the crash the NHRA implemented stricter safety measures: tighter tolerances for chromoly tubing used to build chassis, wider roll cages, thicker padding surrounding drivers' helmets and seven seat belt attachment points to keep drivers more tightly harnessed for added stability and support.

These safety modifications worked. Six months after Eric's death, John Force endured a similar tire shake during a race in Texas. The violent crash broke his left ankle, left wrist and several fingers and put a deep cut on his right knee. Force was airlifted to a nearby hospital, where he spent weeks before leaving in a wheelchair. But the 16-time champion avoided any head trauma.

Paul Walker 'Wearing Seat Belts' and "Air bags deployed".
Walker, 40, and friend Roger Rodas, 38, had no drugs or alcohol in their blood. Both men were wearing seat belts. The airbags deployed as they should have when the car clipped a light pole and several trees, investigators said.

Are you trying to make the case that drivers should not wear seat belts??

The harvest comes at any time, as Our Eternal Light gives life and takes away. He is Our King, Our Savior; the Root of Jesse and the Offspring of David; the First and the Last. Wearing, or not wearing seat belts, makes no difference. When the hour is set, not anything can change the outcome.

Did you ever hear this story?

A very religious man was once caught in rising floodwaters. He climbed onto the roof of his house and trusted God to rescue him. A neighbor came by in a canoe and said, “The waters will soon be above your house. Hop in and we’ll paddle to safety.”

“No thanks” replied the religious man. “I’ve prayed to God and I’m sure he will save me”

A short time later the police came by in a boat. “The waters will soon be above your house. Hop in and we’ll take you to safety.”
No thanks” replied the religious man. “I’ve prayed to God and I’m sure he will save me”

A little time later a rescue services helicopter hovered overhead, let down a rope ladder and said. “The waters will soon be above your house. Climb the ladder and we’ll fly you to safety.”

“No thanks” replied the religious man. “I’ve prayed to God and I’m sure he will save me”

All this time the floodwaters continued to rise, until soon they reached above the roof and the religious man drowned. When he arrived at heaven he demanded an audience with God. Ushered into God’s throne room he said, “Lord, why am I here in heaven? I prayed for you to save me, I trusted you to save me from that flood.”

“Yes you did my child” replied the Lord. “And I sent you a canoe, a boat and a helicopter. But you never got in.” (Analogy for a car crash situation- "You never buckled up").

My old boss wrote and produced this film for General Motors when we both worked for Communico (division of Maritz Corp) in 1978. It's a little hokey, but if you really think seat belts are not effective, or that you don't need them, you should watch it.
