Has your stock exhaust got louder/deeper with age? When my 2009 SRT hit 14,000 miles, it seemed to get noticeably louder and deeper. I think that it was the result of the packing around the resonators deteriorating with age and wear. This caused less noise to be absorbed. Here is a cut-away photo of an SRT resonator with the packing removed.
first thing I did was do away with the resonators. they weigh a ton so ditching the weight helped out. the older Challengers especially the ones with automatics had the suitcase mufflers. After 2010, they started to put the standard trans mufflers on all of them and did away with the suitcase box type. Even My wifes 2011 SE Rally had the bottle type dual mufflers that the RT had on them.
I thought mine got louder cause I Thump it DAILY! I got mufflers to install that'll are supposed to have a deeper tone, but haven't gotten to it yet. Although louder, it still has that tinny, rattle to it. I assume once the stock mufflers and resonators are gone and the new Mufflers go on it'll still be louder, but with a deeper tone, not quieter like most new Mufflers will do to a vehicle. I replaced my stock mufflers with Jones Full Boar mufflers and deleted the resonators. The sound is the same as when installed because they’ Not glass packs. The only way the sound would be different or need to be “broken in” is with glass packs, because of the filler inside.
