I think that the tick is more common with the 5.7s. My 6.1 doesn't have it. I use Mobil 1 0W-40, per factory specs.

i am a tech for JEEP CHRYSLER DODGE RAM. i have a 12 R/T classic. most of the tick noises we hear have been camshafts on MDS equipped engines. i have yet to see it on an EZC motor.( stick w/o mds) we have also heard valve guides. if you have a miss accompanying the tick, more than likely a worn cam lobe. if not, probably a valve guide, requiring a head replacement. maybe you can turn this into a positive opportunity and try a mod you may have been thinking of. BEST OF LUCK, STEVE.

Thanks and I'm not sure if it's a miss that is causing this but it sounds like a popping noise coming from the back of the car it doesn't always do that though just every once in a while so if it was a miss wouldn't it be more consistent

This doesn't sound encouraging. Mine's had a tick since day 1 as a new car. A bad camshaft???? I'm not going to spend $100 for the service agreement deductible on a 4 yr old car with 9,000 miles to have the dealer tell me it's normal. I'll let mine go until it blows up.
