We all know that the computer-controlled automatic will beat a manual in a 1/4 drag race. It's simply a fact that 99.99% of humans cannot shift as fast.

But what if a 392 auto was racing against the greatest stick-man ever, Ronnie Sox, "Mr. 4-Speed" in a 392 manual. Which car would win?

I am saying that the auto would still win 2 of 3, but it would be very close. What do you guys think?

I would go with the current auto. I am a manual fan and also a fan of the Sox & Martin cars, but the reality is the newer computer shifting is much faster. Ronnie Sox raced in a time when automatic transmissions were more simple to drive than a manual, but not faster. The Torqueflights, Turbomatics, and Powerglides were weak and shifted slowly. Today's automatic is a completely different animal

I wanted a manual but my experience, the auto's will virtually always win if the cars are relatively equal. About twice a year I wish I had an auto, the rest of the time I like my manual :)

I agree that it would be close, but the new auto wins.

I am 5-0 against 6 speeds.Beat a 2011 392 twice. 1st race was very close .oo4, second race he did a 30 second burnout and promptly went into limp mode at the tree.A 2010 FF six speed.car had been purchased that day in Dallas and driven to Houston. The owner let his 16 year old son drive it.No contest, I won by .6 A RT unknown what year but the driver weighed about 300 lbs, 1st race I won by .4 and the rematch by .3 all at Houston Motorsports Park 1/8th mile . Using all the conversion formulas my car will run 13.0 or 13.1 @105-106 mph. In mineshaft air could probably run a high 12, but we seldom get those conditions in Houston. The one time we did ,DA was -1900, it was 39*F and they cancelled the racing, said it was too cold.
