IMO, it looks like the hole is an access port to apply some sort of anti rust inhibitor or sound deadening material. Then after the said material is applied they (FCA) then place a plastic bandage on the hole to prevent seepage until the material sets up. It appears that there is some material residue on the tape. My 2015 dos not have these holes??? unless I am not looking at the right spot.

    * What would be the purpose of 'sound deadening' material? I do not believe that any anti-rust treatment would have been used. I'll have to bore scope the hole to check that. There is or was some sediment under the plastic tape which I still maintain, even though they were removed. I can check the properties (sediment) on the backside of the tape in a lab.

If you could, can you put up some photos of your 2015. The area is clearly evident in the photos I posted, on the inside skin of the trunk lid (backside) > Right and Left Corner. Thanks very much for your input.

My 15 has them. Open your trunk and look around the hinges up by the back window. There are two small holes toward the outside corners and two larger holes just inside where the hinges mount on the trunk lid frame structure.

Thanks for confirming that the holes can be seen with the trunk closed.... I was beginning to think it was just my car. I don't think water would get in when the car's stationary during a rain but I can see a small amount getting it if direct water hits it (laser wash or hose). That whole frame area is pretty clean on my car, so there's not a lot of anything really getting in below the trunk lip.
