It's surprising that you have had no apparent problems with the 295/40-20 size. According to all tire guides, the widest tire that you can safely put on a 9 inch wheel is a 275/40-20. Otherwise it will be "pinched" and may not wear or perform properly. See the following diagram (middle image). [/QUOTE]

Nope, tires sit flat on the ground, just a slight bulge,
Less than I had with L60-15’s back in the day

Your tire fitment attachment supports my statement. A 295/40-20 tire needs a minimum 10-inch wide wheel. Better would be an 11-inch wide wheel. A 9-inch wide wheel is too narrow. Although your tire's tread looks flat, the bead of your tire is definitely pinched.

No problems so far and I put more miles on this thing than most of you :)

But that is why I am looking for 285/40ZR20's when I buy NEW rear tires.

It does looks really stupid to put 245/45/20's on 9" from the factory when it calls for 7 1/2"-9" for those tires.

I agree. With all of the torque that these Hemi engines produce, a wider tire is necessary. Besides, they give the Challenger a cooler muscle car look.

That is the "old school" set up that I have on my 2009 SRT. If you want to save some bucks, you might want to consider the new Cooper Zeon RS3-G1 tire. It got excellent reviews. I installed them on my Challenger and they perform great. As a bonus, they have a 500 AAA rating.

How did the coopers work out for you? And you do all 4?

I installed 245/45-20 Cooper tires on the front and 275/40-20 tires on the rear, for that "old school" staggered look.

As expected, they perform great, look great and have no tread noise. With a 500AAA wear rating, I hope to have them for a long time. I highly recommend them.

One word of concern. Supposedly, these all season tires do not perform well in moderate to deep snow. That, however, is not an issue for me since I never drive my SRT in bad weather.
