Sounds like you will quickly regret getting the sxt. If it were me I would be looking for a low mileage low optioned 2015 r/t.
I owned own before the current one. It was a lot of fun with more "go" than you'd need in everyday driving. (0mph - ticket in 6 +/- seconds)

If you get a used ONE owner car from a dealer you should be able to get a warrantee with similar coverage as new.
make sure it's one owner... because (typically) 1st owner "babies" the car. 2nd owner "enjoys" it 3rd owner thrashes it.

At your age insurance will be high (either model) compared to other makes/models but the money you'll save over buying new will offset that, for some time.

Don't settle for something you don't really want!

IMO, get a 2015 or newer, low miles, V8, Auto. The rest is personal preference.

Follow your heart if you can afford it. Don't be the guy or gal that ends up living in your car because you chose car over rent. I have had my '16 R/T for four years now and I have never looked back. Enjoy your youth while you can. The Ward Cleaver lifestyle will get to you soon enough.

You know there is some senior people on this forum when you hear Ward Cleaver..

Buy what you think you won't mind paying for in 2 years. To be honest with you unless you live in area where there Most is no traffic, you not going anywhere.. Even if you have a Hellcat where are you going to use it except for the drag strip.. I think a lot people lease or purchase these cars because they think there being perceived as something they in there own mind there not

And some of us REMEMBER owning and driving the original '70 Challenger and other muscle cars of that era.
That is why I had to have a 2010, 40 years after, same basic grill & tail lights.
    And why I didn't buy a 2015->(1971-74 style)

The SXT is a great street car that you'd be happy with it as a "spirited" commuter car. Guys on this forum are having a lot of fun with them and just like the RT there's a lot of aftermarket mods available for performance, exhaust sound, etc. BUT since you're asking about it vs. a RT, it looks like you're not totally sold on getting the V6. As others have mentioned, don't buy something you might regret later. Take an SXT for another test drive. If you really like its performance, get one. If you're not sure, start looking for a RT.
You can wait and save for a new one or like others suggested, look for a 1-3 yr old pre-owned. You'll get more bang for your buck. You won't take the hit on first year depreciation and depending on mileage, will still have part of the 36 month/36,000 warranty left in case you find a few issues. If going pre-owned see if you can afford an extended warranty for peace of mind so you aren't stuck with a huge expense while in school.
I'm not sure what the current supply is of 2020 RT's but with the 2021's coming out, you may find a good deal on a new 2020 RT after the first of the year. I was occasionally searching for 2014 pre-owned Challengers in 2016 and found a NEW 2015 RT Plus in August 2016, a good 18 months old. It was close to the same price as a 2016 SXT Plus.
Whatever you decide, try to get the "Plus" - 20" wheels, Peformance Pages and Sport mode are well worth it!

I more than remember, I sold my 70 440-6 number's matching Cuda for 85K in 2005. Sexiest car ever made, though I do like my 2020 Challenger GT awd, it moves out very well... Also the suspension is awesome handles great, I am pretty sure if I had a magnuson supercharger installed on it, for the first 500 feet or so I could go neck & neck with a lot of big blocks and probably be a car length a head..

Back to my 2020 SXT owned 4 months now. In the first couple of months, local street driving, stop and go, short trips - about 16mpg. Several weeks ago I took a round trip of 60 miles on the freeway at 65mph and got 19.1mpg.

Yesterday I drove from Phoenix to Prescott and back for a days outing. 95 miles each way. Phoenix elevation is 1100ft. Prescott elevation 5400 ft. Speed limits along the way were 65mph and 75mph, then 65mph to 45mph approaching Prescott.

Gas mileage going up hill to Prescott 22mpg.
Coming back down hill to Phoenix 25.4mpg.

Cruise control, sport setting all the way.

There's a rather arduous stretch of highway from Black Canyon City 1975ft to Sunset Point 3386ft. It's 10 miles with a 6% grade. Lots of mountain curves. Semi trucks and RVs can't make more than 40mph. Anybody who has ever driven that stretch is decidedly not a fan.

The SXT took it in stride. The 8 speed AT shifted smoothly and the cruise control stayed right on the 65mph limit for that stretch. The Sport setting kept the car right where it was supposed to be and the ride was very comfortable and quiet. Made the trip feel shorter than it usually does.

That car should get 30mpg no problem on the Hwy....why would you need sport mode for Hwy driving?
