Some owners of new Challengers, out of warranty, are still reluctant to use Mobil 1 synthetic oil because it does not meet FCA specs. They stick with Pennzoil even though it may be harder to find or is more expensive.

Mobil 1 synthetic is an excellent full synthetic oil that was the factory fill (0-40W) for the 6.1 SRTs. I have been using it in my 2009 Challenger SRT and with no issues (and no ticking).

FCA made a business decision to go with Pennzoil. To support this relationship, FCA started listing a spec, for its 6.4 engines that only Pennzoil met. Mobil 1 and many others probably made a financial decision that there wouldn’t be enough of a return, based on the high cost to get certified.

Here is what Mobil 1 stated:

“Chrysler’s latest revision to the MS-6395 specification calls for a field trial spanning multiple seasons over two years. While we fully expect the exceptional performance of Mobil 1 synthetic motor oil to meet Chrysler’s specification requirements, at this time we are in the process of evaluating our timeline to start this testing.”

Exxon/Mobil and FCA are clearly sore at each other. Mobil 1 0-40W has everything in it but the kitchen sink and meets rigid European standards for high performance cars, like Porsche. Also, 5-30W has ACEA specifications that few "regular" synthetics meet.

Unless your car is still under warranty, use it with confidence.

I have used Mobil1 for 20+ years with good results.

They key words in your post are "out of warranty." That's because Mobil1 apparently still hasn't done the testing to meet the current FCA specs (MS-12766) for the 6.4 (392) HEMI engines to keep your warranty intact.

Though to make things confusing ... Mobil Super and Mobil Synthetic DO meet the FCA specs (MS-6395) for the 5.7 HEMI engines while Mobil1 does not.

If you're out of warranty ... use whatever you want.

If you're still under FCA's warranty ... I'd strongly consider using Pennzoil, Valvoline, or Amsoil that meets the current spec.

New here, just joined yesterday. Don't forget about Quaker State Ultimate Durability. I've been running it in my 2017 Ram with the HEMI for almost 2K miles and so far its been whisper quiet. No startup tick which I had plenty of even with Pennzoil Ultra Platinum. Its also FCA compliant if you're concerned about that. I also have a 2016 Challenger with the 5.7 which I run Redline 5W30 in. No 5W20 in either of my Hemi's, warranty be damned. I'd recommend Amsoil or Redline 0W40 or 5W40 for the 6.1./6.4. If you're getting any startup tick you need to find a different brand/weight of oil.

With my years in drag racing an engine abuse i run 0-40 synthetic Lucas oil, order the 5gallon pail as well as substitute 1 qrt with the Lucas stabilizer, which I order 4 gallons at a time.
Brings my oil change price down by 1/2 compared to going to store, do to some extreme testing few people did I run the wix xp filter , comparable an better then the original srt filter.
I have over 130k with no issues, I drive my 6speed srt8 with headers hard everyday. Do same with Wifes 5.7 10w30 sun. An the stabilizer we have 220k an still going strong never a bottom end yet

We have a sos lab at my work I have compared Lucas, mobile, an Royal purple found the royal viscosity is low.. which is why most people see oil leaks after use does have many friction additives like Lucas. ISO about same across board. When my mix is out to test viscosity an property’s keep up after use

Just my life experience on nitro cars we did a mix just like this with Lucas.. also little secret even when people have oil sponsors like penzoil, Quaker state, etc.. in the nitro cars they use Lucas .. we use to dump the oil out of our sponsor jugs an fill with Lucas.. the oil just survives an protects..

I have used Mobil 1 for years in my Ford's and Chevy's, so Mobil 1 cannot be used in my Scat Pack?

I've been using Mobil 1 for the better part of 20 years and have never had an issue. I purchased my '13 R/T in March, 2015, with 35,396 miles on it. I immediately switched to Mobil 1. I actually have no idea what was used before I got the car; but, Mobil 1 is all it's seen since my ownership began. About every 3 oil changes (I do my own) I send a sample to Blackstone labs. Here's the latest report from this past October with 79,652 miles.

Mobil/Exxon has a confusing variety of Mobil oils. Here is their explanation for this and a statement explaining the difference between Mobil 1 and Mobil Super Synthetic oil.

"A variety of synthetic oil technologies exist, and we recognize that consumers have different needs. That’s why we now offer a wider range of synthetic oil technologies. Mobil 1™, our line of advanced full synthetic oils, uses the latest in additive and base oil technologies for outstanding performance and protection. Mobil Super™ Synthetic is a full synthetic that uses synthetic base oils and provides performance consistent with many synthetics in the market.

Mobil 1 is part of our ultimate line of advanced full synthetics. It uses the latest in additive and base oil technologies that provide superior protection, and outperforms Mobil Super Synthetic.

It meets both GM’s stringent Dexos1* and Europe’s ACEA performance standards. More car builders recommend Mobil 1 by name than any other motor oil brand in the world. More NASCAR drivers use Mobil 1 than any other motor oil brands. Mobil 1 has provided exceptional performance throughout its nearly 40-year history and stands alone as The World’s Leading Synthetic Motor Oil Brand.

Mobil Super Synthetic is a full synthetic that uses synthetic-base oils. It outperforms our conventional and synthetic blend products. It meets or exceeds the latest industry requirements, GF-5 /API SN. The product offers performance consistent with many synthetics in the market."
