This is a follow-up from my prior post about "so many Challengers' seen along our travels to Route 66 in late April and early May. If you get the opportunity to travel along Rte 66 in your Challenger or any sports or muscle car, these stops may be enjoyable for you. Please excuse the Trans Am in some of the photos and imagine your Challenger there instead. Apparently I can only do 5 photos at a time so scroll down for more. Photo #1 - the midway point for Rte 66 2 - The world's largest gas pump in Sapulpa, OK 3 - Oklahoma signs 4 & 5 - Pop's Soda in Arcadia OK. 100's of varieties of sodas for sale plus a diner inside where we had dinner.
#6 - The famous motel in Tucumcari NM where we stayed one night just for the experience. 7 - Amarillo TX Rte 66 steak house. It's a cool atmosphere inside w/ really decent steaks. 8 - Old Esso station in Tucumcari NM 9 - Old Texaco station in Tucumcari NM 10 - Excellent museum in Kingman AZ
#11 - "Standin' on a corner in Winslow AZ". Local shops play the Eagles hit. Even the flatbed Ford is there along with the statues. 12 - Delightful lunch spot in Kingman AZ right across from the museum I mentioned earlier. Wonderful old fashioned shakes with the metal cup leftovers. 13 - Cool Springs Station near Oatman AZ 14 - Oatman AZ where the burros still roam the street. It's hard to believe this was Rte 66. 15 - Sitgreaves Pass outside Oatman AZ
#16 - Old Phillips 66 in McLean TX 17 - Old restored Conoco in Shamrock TX. Storm approaching. Noticed a tail light out too. 18 - Wigwam Motel in Holbrook AZ. Each 'tent' has an old car in front. Not the best accomodations but fun to experience. 19 - Rio Grande Bridge and Gorge near Taos NM. Not Rte 66 but close by near Santa Fe. 20 - Another museum (many along the way) in Santa Rosa OK
I wanted to add this one too. The desolate road near Oatman. It makes me want to go again, and I just got home!! I'm hooked on road trips, always have been.
Thanks for posting. A former manager I worked with for many years is the mayor of Shamrock, Texas. BTW... he has a pretty sweet Barracuda convertible that made a magazine cover. Just not exactly are related. https://www.texascooppower.com/travel/panhandle-plains/rendezvous-on-route-66 Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
