Just paid over $4 /gal for the 1st time

Those were the days when premium was only 0.20 more per gallon, but it is not the case anymore. I don't know when it changed, but I'm guessing at least 10-15 years ago and is now anywhere from 0.60 to 0.80 more per gallon. As an example at Marathon right now it is 3.08 for regular and 3.74 for premium. I would have no problem paying 0.20 more per gallon, but 0.66 is way too much difference IMO. Plus if it isn't hurting your engine and you may lose say 5-10hp that you probably won't even notice. That is a substantial savings over time if you fill up several times a month. Now if I were going to the track and wanted to get every tenth, then I would wait until near empty and fill up with premium a few days before that way you can get the maximum hp.

 

To save money, the real key is miles per gallon. My 2009 SRT (6.1) gets 18 mpg (premium) on the highway. If I have to go on a long trip, I use my wife''s 2020 Hyundai Elantra. Its 2.0 4-cylinder engine gets 39 mpg. Quite a difference.[/QUOTE]

Be sure to have a fire extinguisher at the ready in the Elantra (assuming you'd want to put the engine fire out?)!

 

These price increases were both avoidable and predictable. Don't get me started.

 

I can't speak for anyone else but I sure didn't buy my Challenger thinking about gas prices. I'll still drive it the same 3,000 - 4,000 miles per year with $2 gas or $7 gas. Life is too short to fret about that stuff. With insurance (home, car, etc...) going up every year along with property taxes, utilities, food, etc... I sure won't deny myself the pleasure of driving the cars I want.
Pay for the nasty stuff and not for my own pleasure?? Not a chance. If I can't afford a few hundred dollars a year on gas fluctuations I sure need to take a look in the mirror and wonder why I am paying hundreds of dollars extra for everything else I have no choice about.
I even try to imagine driving my R/T as a daily driver putting 15k+ miles on the odometer every year and I would still have bought it. It depends on priorities in your life. Cars have always been at the top for me.

 

It must be regional. In Northeast Ohio regular is averaging $3.08, premium is $3.79, so the dif is $0.71.
Cosco is $2.79 / $3.24 respectively... so $0.45 difference.
I don't worry much about the price or what my mpg is even though my Challenger is a DD. If those stats were important to me, I would have bought something else.
Ah, the saga of the "Price for Power" continues just like in the 70's. (and 80's, and 90's ...)

 

Yeah, it does help to shop around as regular was 2.89 in the town I work in yesterday, but I waited and got some in my town where it was 3.15. That gas buddy app doesn't seem to be very accurate and the nearest Costco is almost an hour away from me too. But you guys are right, we didn't get these muscle cars for gas mileage, but still you don't want the worst mileage either. My Mustang usually averages between 21-24mpg. I did notice some of the other sports cars with a turbo 6 get better mileage (when you are not getting on it a lot) like the Supra, M2 and most likely the new Z.

That's why my daily is a heavily modified twin turbo 6 and not my Challenger (for the much better fuel mileage cost)!
