The shaker hood is a cool-looking option. I had one on my 1971 'Cuda. However, unlike the one that was on my car and the 1970-1971 Challenger R/T, the air takes a circuitous route to the throttle body. The old shakers sat directly on top of the carburetor and actually produced a small ram air effect at the top end of the drag strip. Racer X also conducted an interesting experiment. He wanted to see if the current shaker reduces the air intake temperature. To do this he compared two 392 Challengers- one with a shaker and one with a standard air intake. What were the results? The shaker had no advantage over the stock air intake- surprisingly, the air was 5 degrees hotter. Here is his comparison test.
I’ve got a friend with a Scat Pack Shaker and another with a T/A. They both have the same engine and the T/A guy says the Shaker makes your car’s performance actually go down. I didn’t ask him why, but is there any truth to that? What is the benefit of it? I think you can actually buy kits to turn your car into a Shaker style, but I don’t know why someone would do it.
