In the early 1990s, there was a real threat that the recession would cause Chrysler/Dodge to go under.

The corporation was saved by the Daimler-Chrysler merger of 1998. (Note- The merged corporation operated from 1998 to 2007).

Based on this merger, Chrysler was able to tap into the Mercedes performance parts bin of its E and S class models and, ultimately, develop the Challenger in 2008.

Here is a list of the Mercedes parts used in the 2008 Challenger:
    1. Basic Platform (derived from the W210 E-Class-1996-2002)
    2. 5-Link Rear Suspension (W211 E-Class).
    3. Control Arm Front Suspension (W220 S-Class).
    4. Driveshaft.
    5. Brake Assist.
    6. ESP Controller.
    7. Engine Modules (IP cluster, Canbus technology).
    8. Steering Column/Controls.
    9. NAG-1, 5-speed automatic transmission (W5A580).
    10. FOBIK Keyless-Go.
    11. Rear differential (E-class).
    12. Seat Frames.
    13. HVAC System (BEHR).

I'm pretty sure that my 2017 and previous 2012 Grand Cherokees have some Mercedes DNA as well

What recession in the late 1990s? I only see a minor one from 7/90 to 3/91.

You are correct. The recession ran for 9 months in the early 90s. It was caused by the 1989 savings and loan crisis, higher interest rates, and Iraq's invasion of Kuwait. GDP was -3.6% in Q4 1990 and -1.9% in Q1 1991. Unemployment peaked at 7.8% in June 1992
