Here is an excerpt from the repair manual. It has a caution about how to avoid premature clear coat failure and loss of UV protection.
Recently been working with 3000 grit, Meguiars Ultimate and a buffer in attempt to remove some clear coat scratching to not much avail (shined up nicely but didn't eliminate much if any of the scratching). Perhaps the scratches I worked on are deeper than the clear coat. Seems all of these scratch remedies are not worthy of one's time and money. Some of these products are big seller's and perhaps a worthy target of a class action.
Quick Check: If you can feel or catch the edge of the scratch with your fingernail its too deep to buff out just the clearcoat. Wet your index finger and wipe it over the scratched area. If the scratch disappears its only in the clearcoat. If the scratch gets darker its into the basecoat.
I have been using Liquid Glass Polish since 1979. Since then the formulation has changed and there have been lawsuits but I was able to get 6 more cans. It's hard to get now. The more applications you put on the more protection you get but it is not necessary as it hold up great and hides/covers swirls and scratches.
