On Sept. 21, Dodge will be unveiling its next limited edition Challenger. Supposedly, it will be called the Black Ghost, in deference to the legendary street racer 1970 Hemi Challenger that roamed the streets of Detroit. It will feature a Hellcat engine and will make similar power to the Jailbreak mode. Only 300 will be built.

Here is Racer X's take on this.

As predicted, the new Buzz model unveiled today, is the Challenger Black Ghost- a modern-day Challenger that channels the HEMI®-powered spirit of a muscle car that haunted metro Detroit’s famed Woodward Avenue in the 1970s.

The original Black Ghost, a black 1970 Dodge Challenger RT SE (special edition) owned by Godfrey Qualls, ruled Woodward Avenue in the 1970s. Qualls’ 1970 Challenger quickly earned a legendary reputation for flexing its 426 HEMI-powered muscle on Woodward and then driving off mysteriously into the night, not to be seen again for months, leading to the “Black Ghost” nickname. Not simply a local legend, in 2020, Qualls’ vehicle earned a spot on the National Historic Vehicle Register, and remains in the Qualls family to this day.

The 2023 Dodge Challenger Black Ghost special edition offers a modern manifestation of the historic vehicle, wrapping a black-and-chrome appearance, including unique black “gator skin” roof vinyl graphics similar to the original, around a Challenger SRT® Hellcat Redeye Widebody bumped up to 807 horsepower.

The 2023 Dodge Challenger Black Ghost is the sixth of seven special-edition Dodge “Last Call” models, following the previously announced Dodge Challenger Shakedown, Dodge Charger Super Bee, Dodge Challenger and Charger Scat Pack Swinger, and Dodge Charger King Daytona models. The “Last Call” models celebrate the Dodge Challenger and Dodge Charger, which are coming to an end in their current forms.

Highlights of the 2023 Dodge Challenger Black Ghost include:

    • Black “gator skin” roof vinyl
    • Bright Dodge fascia badge
    • White rear fender graphics
    • Challenger script grille, fender and spoiler badges
    • Midnight Metallic SRT grille badge
    • Bright fuel filler door
    • Black six-piston Brembo brake system
    • 3.09:1 rear axle ratio
    • 20-by-11-inch Satin Carbon Warp Speed wheels
    • Black Mopar® hood pins
    • Black Ghost interior instrument panel badge
    • Alcantara/Laguna leather seats and door bolsters
    • Alcantara steering wheel with red SRT logo
    • Real carbon fiber bezels and Dynamica suede headliner

Just one final Dodge “Last Call” model will be announced — the very last of its kind — at the 2022 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, scheduled
    for Nov. 1-4, 2022.

Ralph Gilles has offered some insight for the inspiration of the fifth and sixth cars of the Last Call series, the Dodge King Daytona and the Challenger Black Ghost. Both honor black street legends.

Specifically, the Charger King Daytona pays homage to Los Angeles street racer Big Willie Robinson, an influential Black racer who founded the International Brotherhood of Street Racers and raced in a series of Dodge Charger Daytonas. He also fought to open the Terminal Island drag strip in Long Beach as means to keeping Southern California youth safe from gang activity and street violence. Robinson died in 2012, but his legend has only grown since. His last remaining Daytona, after a full restoration, sold, at auction for $154,000 (and was just listed again at Mecum's 2023 Kissimmee auction). While the Last Call Charger King Daytona doesn't replicate any of Robinson's Daytonas exactly, the logo font and name come directly from his first Daytona.

The Challenger Black Ghost, in turn, pays homage to Detroit street racer Godfrey Qualls and his Hemi-powered 1970 Challenger R/T SE- a car that reportedly proved nigh-unbeatable on the streets of Detroit. The illegal nature of street racing- compounded by Qualls's day job as a traffic cop for the Detroit Police Department- kept him from interacting with many of the other street racers in the scene or from regularly throwing down against them. He'd randomly appear on the streets then disappear for months or years, leading some to consider the all-black car with the Gator Grain vinyl roof something of a wraith and an urban legend, dubbing it the Black Ghost. Qualls died in 2015, leaving the Challenger to his son, Gregory, who has since maintained it in unrestored, as-raced condition, and had it added to the National Register of Historic Vehicles. The Last Call version of the Black Ghost replicates the original's black paint with white bumblebee stripe and uses a roof graphic to approximate the vinyl roof.

I think Ray Barton missed an opportunity by not putting out a special 1500hp or so Ray Barton Edition. His N/A Gen II Hemis already rock at LEAST 900hp in Super Stock.

My favorite black enthusiast is Mod2Fame. I would like to see him do a 2000hp Hellcat with his turbos.
I like that he got rid of the turquoise color scheme wrap. It didn't seem to fit the Hellcat, for some reason.
