Is it purely cost? Does the R/T handle better than SRT?
Same thing could be said why do most people buy the SXT over both of these models R/T and SRT? Is the SXT a better more comfortable riding car? It is less in cost in maintenance, insurance and gas. Or out of these 3 models is one model known for reliablity over the others two model?

The SXT gives you a Rally package for appearance with a V-6 for fuel economy. Priced near or same as an R/T. R/T gives you a Hemi and bigger horsepower than the V-6. Great car for the money. Usually starting around $31K. The SRT is a beast with the 6.4 and Brembo brakes but starts at $42K. All the Challengers offer something for everyone. Even a base model V-6 has 305 hp and is still a Challenger without breaking the bank. Mostly depends on the amount of money you are willing to spend.

I'm thinking it is what is in your budget. That was my reasoning. I just couldn't see spending another $10k for the R/T or $15 for the SRT. The SE drives just fine for city driving and gets up to speed on the highway. Would I like to play with the punch of a Hemi? Sure.

Depending on options when I price it out the R/T can be priced very close to the slower SXT depending on options. But if R/T rides like a brick feeling every bump and pebble on the road forget it I will go with the softer riding car or option the car get the most comfortable soft ride.

I also notice that among the 3 models they have different colors or appearance packages/decals. There seem to be less SRT models in white and more in SXT Challengers in white color.

Colors & decals are part of the pricing. More basic colors in the SXT, a few rare colors in R/T, & very rare colors in SRT. That is one of the items that influences pricing. Also the R/T rides great for long road trips.

I bought the R/T after comparing the cost- the SRT8 was way out of my budget. I called the insurance company and found out how much more a SRT8 cost in comparison, decided on the R/T. VERY happy with my choice.

I already checked with my insurance company with different deductibles and rates and the R/T is basically right in the middle. I looked into tire replacement costs too.

R/T seems to have the best appearance packages and is available in white.
All 3 models look good and very basic from sxt to srt.

For me it was about color and transmission choice. I first looked at a SRT8 but the dealer (in TX) would not negotiate at all. I settled for a R/T because it was one of the few PCP 6speeds left. I do not regret my choice. While the bigger engine would have been nice, it is by no means necessary. I do not race or track my car, but some occasional "spirited" driving does happen. The 5.7 does well enough for that.
