I am not a lover of EVs, but I have to respect their performance. In Motor Trend's Winter Issue, the following impressive performance figures were quoted for 2024/2025 models: SUVs Rivian R1S- 10.5 [email protected] mph, 0-60 mph- 2.6 sec. Hyundai Ion1q 5N- 11.0 [email protected] mph, 0-60 mph- 2.8 sec. Mustang Mach 1 E- 11.8 [email protected] mph, 0-60 mph- 3.3 sec. GMC Hummer EV 3X- 11.8 [email protected] mph, 0-60 mph- 3.4 sec. (8,673 lbs.) Porsche Cayenne- 12.6 [email protected] mph, 0-60 mph- 4.1 sec. Acura ZDX- 12.7 [email protected] mph, 0-60 mph- 4.2 sec. Kia EV9- 13.2 [email protected] mph, 0-60 mph- 4.4 sec. Impressive numbers! I had a 2017 Chevy Volt (admittedly nowhere near as fast as the vehicles listed), and the low-end torque of EV motors is incredible! However, I think EVs will remain a niche market until they solve the long charge-time problem. Even the "fast" chargers still take ~45 minutes to go from near empty to near full, and the fast chargers damage the batteries over time, so you're supposed to only use them on special occasions like during long trips. Getting it down to under 10 minutes will be the trigger point. That will require completely new battery technology (and hopefully that technology will include being able to recycle said new batteries).
EV's are here, and I suspect they will progress slowly over time. But for everyone who has concerns about the ice engines being discontinued anytime soon, I don't see that happening, as I keep seeing new construction of Nouria gas stations being built. Nobody is going to drive any of those rich middle Eastern countries out of business!
EV car styling, top performance model pricing, battery replacement cost and the sounds they make are barriers for me currently, but would consider the Charger used market at the right price point.
The biggest problem is the grid has to be 10x bigger to have everyone drive an EV. Europe and Scandinavia is getting a taste of the high cost of charging, even at home. They drank the koolaid, and now the chickens have come home to roost. Glad we got Trump. Drill baby drill!
