I'm in the minority, but I would prefer it on the passenger side. The lines for many of those one-way drive-through gas and go's is shorter for right-hand fill. I'm thinking specifically of Costco. I often will stretch the fill hose over to the driver's side.

I like where Chevy put it on the ‘56 Bel-Air. Anyone remember that? My dad had a ‘56 and many years ago I pulled into a gas station in downtown Boston. I grabbed the hose and was going to fill the car when the young attendant (who was obviously foreign) ran out and practically ripped the nozzle from my hand. “I fill for you!” Ok, this should be entertaining. I let him circle the car three times looking for the gas cap, then I showed him where it was, behind the left taillight. :D

What, a 9mpg Hemi running out of gas? What were they THINKING?
