Veteran land speed racing driver Chris Raschke was piloting the Speed Demon streamliner on Sunday afternoon on the Bonneville Salt Flats when he lost control of the car and crashed. Medical crews were on hand within seconds, and a medical evacuation helicopter arrived on the salt, but Raschke was pronounced dead on the scene.

The accident occurred approximately 2.5 miles from the starting line as Speed Demon was traveling at close to 300 mph. Witnesses reported seeing the car kick up a spray of salt and dust before becoming airborne. Investigators are still determining the cause.

I do not think a roll bar would do much good at traveling close to 300 mph.
