The long rumored 6.2L Supercharged Hemi, nicknamed "HellCat," will debut in the Summer of 2013 for the 2014MY. It will be based on the 6.1 Hemi- with a possible Aluminum Block- and displacing approximately 375 CID (6.2L). Horsepower output will be around 600 HP plus/minus with cylinder head technology developed for/and used on the current 392 Hemi due to its excellent flow numbers will be applied.

Boost (psi) to deliver the approximate 600 HP- plus/minus- stock would be in the 9 to 15 psi range to deliver the horsepower/torque numbers. Currently Chevy/Cadilliac uses 9psi to develop 580 HP in their 6.2L SC V8s and the Ford 5.8 SC V8 uses 15 psi to deliver 662 HP in their 2013-14 GT500. Expect 9 or 10 psi for stock boost giving the aftermarket plenty of room to mod up to 15 psi. A modded "HellCat" should out-horsepower the 5.8 SC GT500 due to the fact that you cannot change both pulleys- like on the 5.4 (2007-12) models. Even Shelby SuperSnakes (2013MY) with the Stage 1 setup (5.8) doesn't touch the Ford factory setup. The entire SC is replaced to deliver 850 HP (Stage 2)!

Internals will be highly upgraded, as well as the remainder of the drivetrain to handle the horsepower/torque requirements. Direct Injection and other measures will be applied to deliver MPG, with possible Rear End Gear Ratios being lowered as well for 6speed cars from 3.92 to 3.64 range.

For transmissions - a 6speed Manual and either a 5 or 8 speed (still possible) for automatic cars. Nothing yet is totally confirmed on the remainder of the drivetrain upgrade. However, look for the SRT 6.2 SC "HellCat" package to be in the same ballpark as the ZL1 and GT500.

The ZL1 utilizes a 1.9L twin-screw blower on its 580hp 6.2L LSA engine. In another application, the ZR1 Corvette utilizes a 2.3L twin-screw blower on its 638hp LS9 engine. I have no idea what the boost levels are, but GM is awfully conservative with their SC engine tuning, yet they're seeing almost 640hp from a 6.2L. I'd be surprised if all SRT could muster from a blown 6.2L HEMI was 600hp.

I'll believe it has an aluminum block or direct injection only when I'm actually looking at one. Chrysler doesn't appear to have the will or the money to bring the HEMI up to date...but I'd be thrilled to be wrong. One technical obstacle to D.I.: any oil in the PCV discharge. PCV oil-misting is a serious bugaboo on the current HEMI and with D.I., severe valve coking will result unless that problem is completely solved. Just look at the lengths that GM went to while trying to solve their lesser PCV oil-mist problem when designing the new D.I. LT1 Corvette engine...

I wonder if this will be a "last gasp" for the Challenger? Rumors are the "big" cars are going away as the LX Chassis gets smaller to meet new EPA standards and that big V8's will pretty much go away after 2016 with new CAFE standards

    2015 Barracuda

The April 2013 issue of Car and Driver had a small article and artist rendering of the 2015 Barracuda. According to the article, it will replace "at least the Dodge Challenger SRT8, if not the whole Challenger lineup." The powertrains will be "four, six, and eight cylinder engines, ranging from 2.0 liters to 6.2 liters, most with direct injection. At least one Hemi V8 will continue, and a supercharged Hemi is a distinct possibility. The transmission choices should include conventional and dual-clutch automatics, plus a six or seven speed stick." Prices will range from "mid-$20Ks to high $40Ks."

It seems that Dodge is now trying to appeal to the new generation of car buyers with this styling.

    Car & Driver Article

Sorry but I'm disapointed that the current body style may be ending. When I decided to get another vehicle and the wife and I decided to go retro back to our early driving days and muscle cars, we ending up falling in love with the Challenger. Closest this other than the Cally is the Mustang as far as being retro. But of course the Challenger won out for better year round drivability and looks. The one shown in C&D looks nothing like a challenger and nothing like what an old guy like me would drive. Mark me disapointed.
