2013 Challenger R/T. Hi there fellas, I have a serious problem. I'd been smelling coolant the last few months but never seen a leak. After an investigation I'd noticed a small crack in the reservoir. Car never over heated or any major leaks. I replaced the reservoir with a new one. Bled the system. That's when I started having issues. Went to drive the car and everything was fine. Come home park the car and hours later the reservoir was boiling over and leaking all the coolant out in the garage! After that I noticed there was a small leak in the seam of the radiator. Fast forward, replaced water pump, radiator, thermostat, upper and lower hoses. I even put the old reservoir back in today. Drove the car for the first time after installing the old reservoir because the new one was an amazon one and it boiled up again!!! smh. Please Help!
One simple thing. Did you replace the radiator cap? The cap’s spring maintains the system pressure and directs excess into the reservoir. A worn cap lets pressure escape, lowering the boiling point and allowing coolant to boil off sooner. Get it pressure tested or buy a new one. Another simple thing. Did you use the right type of coolant? Using the wrong antifreeze type or diluting with tap water repeatedly can reduce effectiveness, lead to corrosion, and lower boiling protection. If you have eliminated these two possible issues, there may be a leak between the combustion chamber and the cooling system. This would force hot gas into the radiator and cause rapid overheating and bubbling. This is serious and requires engine repair.
Hey man, thanks for the reply. I changed the cap and made sure the right antifreeze was in there too. I should've mentioned this yesterday. I need to clear something up. After I drove it yesterday, after the installment of the old reservoir, I thought it boiled up again but honestly I'm not too sure if it did. It didn't leak out or anything but since the old reservoir was all orange it was hard to tell plus my WIFE was all in my ear about other crap. Had the level marked with a black sharpie and it was still sitting at that level before my drive this afternoon. It's 100 degrees out right now and I just came back from a long drive. Parked her in the garage and I'll go check on it in an hour or so. I'll definitely keep you posted!
