A new crop of deadly airbags have appeared. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has released findings that "suggest substandard Chinese air bag inflators, likely illegally imported into the United States, are to blame for 10 fatalities and two serious injuries in a dozen crashes over the past three years. All 12 crashes involved Chinese frontal driver air bag inflators manufactured by Jilin Province Detiannuo Safety Technology Co., Ltd. (DTN) that ruptured during a crash." (Note- Identified with the numbers DTN60DB on the inflator cap and manufactured between 2021 and 2022).

Like the largest automotive recall in history, the Takata airbag scandal that's still claiming lives today, these Chinese inflators exploded and sent large metal fragments into drivers' chests, necks, eyes, and faces. So far, all known crashes

Repair shops and dealers can buy DTN inflator modules straight from the manufacturer, but those can be pricey. For example, an original GM-manufactured Malibu replacement airbag for model year 2020 costs upwards of $1,000. To save a little money shops may opt to purchase that same 2020 Malibu replacement from a junkyard or on sites like eBay where you can get them "used" (not deployed). EBay, as well as car-parts.com (great for finding used parts in junkyards in your area) sell these from $145 to a little over $500. If you really want to save some money though, you can go with an aftermarket airbag, which can cost about $100.

However, buyer beware! These non-OEM air bags can be deadly. Read the following article:
