Charger- Slowest Selling New Car

Carscoops published an article about unsold U.S. new car inventories.

Leading the pack is the new Charger, with a staggering 385-day supply. CarEdge estimates there are 10,796 examples on dealer lots nationwide while just 1,261 sold over the past 45 days.

This has resulted in plenty of leverage for anyone walking into a Dodge showroom. also, it has forced Dodge into offering incentives, like the current Power Dollars promotion (a $10 per hp. cash allowance- $4,200 for a Charger R/T and $5,500 for a Charger Scat Pack, now through August 3).

Also, slow-selling are the two-door Jeep Wrangler-230-day supply, Gladiator- 222 days, Grand Wagoneer- 215 days, Grand Wagoneer L- 204 days, and Cherokee-199 days.

Some dealers are discounting the new Charger by 40%.

 

Dodge has announced that it will be unveiling a Charger Scat Pack, on August 8, during Roadkill Nights, that will exceed 550 hp.

I agree. it is a nice-looking car and has a very modern interior. The only problem is the high MSRP.

 

I hear you, but it's all about power-to-weight. Massive power will overcome weight and produce a very fast car.

On Roadkill Nights, Dodge is, reportably, debuting a 1,000 hp. Charger Six Pack Racepack.

That being said, TK's Garage feels that it will not be successful due to these three reasons:

1. High-boost engines have longevity problems.
2. Chargers are not holding their value. Many owners are experiencing $25K depreciation two months after purchase.
3. The in-line six is too quiet for HEMI enthusiasts.

 

A lot of people criticize the design of the new Charger. But, did you know, that our Challenger almost met the same fate? We should all thank the exterior designer, Michael Castiglione- a true muscle car guy- for the great retro design of the Challenger.

Here is my take on why the new Charger is not selling.

The Six Pack (550 hp.) does 0-60 mph in 4.3 sec. and the quarter mile in 12.3 sec. @116 mph. (Note- a 1,000 hp. The SRT version will, supposedly, be debuting at Roadkill Nights). So, it's not the performance- it can run with a 6.4. It's the absence of a HEMI and the high base MSRP of $60K. Also, it's not the styling (after all, the non-retro 6th gen 4-door Charger sold well).

If U.S. buyers wanted an inline 6 with twin turbos, they would buy an M series BMW.

Dodge should remember what sold in the late 60s/early 70s- inexpensive muscle cars, like the Road Runner and Duster 340, with big horsepower. If it did that, its cars would sell like popcorn in the movie theater.

Just to move their inventory, dealers are currently giving big discounts.
