How is Horsepower Calculated?

    Did you know horsepower is calculated from torque and RPM?

    The basic formula is:

    HP = (Torque × RPM) /5,252

    Torque is measured in lb-ft, and RPM is the engine’s revolutions per minute.

    The reason 5,252 appears in the equation is because it comes from the relationship between rotational motion, torque, and the traditional definition of one horsepower.

    In other words, horsepower isn’t a separate force that an engine somehow produces alongside torque. It is a measurement of power, calculated from how much torque the engine produces and how quickly it is rotating.

    This is why engines are built to achieve maximum torque before 5,252 RPM and maximum RPM after 5,252 RPM. Different applications will dictate where engines are designed to build peak torque.

    This is of little usefulness unless one knows how to determine torque. This would be more user friendly.
