Did you realize that the Challenger has been around for 25 years (off and on) and almost one-million of them have been produced? This is remarkable, because its sister car, the Plymouth Barracuda, only lasted for 11 years (1964-1974). The first generation, from 1970 to 1974, produced 165,437 Challengers. The second (and forgettable) generation, from 1978-1983, produced 150,000 to 180,000 (estimated) Challengers. This Japanese re-branded car was also known as the Mitsubishi Saporro and Scorpion. And the third generation, from 2008 to the present, has produced an incredible 673,045 Challengers (645,509 for the U.S.)! Note- An interesting sidenote is that the first use of the Challenger name, by Dodge, was in 1959 for marketing a "value version" of the full-sized Coronet Silver Challenger.
Whoa. Chrysler sure made some ugly cars in the 50’s. Note that even back then they used common bodies, as evidenced by this Desoto… Or as my dad used to call it - a “De-so-slow” by the “Christ-what-motors” corporation!
Not all of the 50s Chryslers were slow. My Dad had a 1958 Imperial with a 392 Hemi. It had 345 hp and 450 lb-ft. It was one fast luxury car.
