Challenger and Charger thefts have been getting out of hand and Stellantis is taking action to protect car owners.

Tim Kuniskis was quoted as saying, “More than 150 cars are stolen every day in the United States” and “for any car owner, it’s terrible, it’s a hassle and it’s a personal violation.” In southeast Michigan alone, more than 1,000 Chargers were stolen last year.

As part of a software update, Dodge will introduce a “double verification” security system on 2015-2021 Challenger SRT and Charger SRT models equipped with either a naturally aspirated 6.4-liter V8 or a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine. 2019-2021 Scat Pack models, with the 6.4-liter V8, are also eligible for the upgrade.

The software update is expected to become available in the second quarter and, when it arrives, it can be installed for free at Dodge dealerships. The company didn’t say much about the update, but it will add a new Security Mode to the Uconnect infotainment system. Without the right four-digit security code, the vehicle’s engine speed will be limited to 2.8 hp. and 675 rpm.

This, however, could be a real problem for forgetful owners. Anyone interested?

Stellantis should make the security software update available at no charge for all 2015 and up Challengers and Chargers.

Kids around here are stealing Hemi Challengers and Chargers and making a game of it. There have been a bunch of accidents and deaths of innocent people while police are pursuing the thieves so now there's a big issue by law enforcement and cities of when to chase or NOT to chase at high speeds. Most now will call off a high speed chase for a ton of reasons.

The thieves know this and now are making a game of stealing them on the westside of town and driving at over 100 mph to the east side and then dumping them or using them for robberies.

Anything to make this harder should be available

Maybe they might, but for now, the free update is only available for 2015-2021 Challenger SRT and Charger SRT models equipped with either a 6.4 or a supercharged 6.2 engine. Also, for the 2019-2021 Scat Packs with the 6.4.

I'm interested, just about everything has two factor verification today or at least the option.

Do you think this has anything to do with last week's software update message I received in my 2019 Challenger?

    Most likely. Call your dealer.
