I came across these cutaway photos of the infamous rocker panel foam and rusted metal. I suspect that Challengers that are driven daily in all types of weather will experience this problem.
My 70 SE Did, but not the Rocker Panels (back when Special Edition meant something Special) Wheel Wells, and under the Vinyl Top and around the Small Back Window adapter. This NEW (2010) has so much Plastic & Aluminum I doubt I will have as much problems. For those who haven't seen an SE (Not Mine, but mine was Plumb Crazy too )
Back in the 70's cars certainly corroded a lot more. Wasn't odd to see rust popping up in only 4-5 years. Less in the rust belt! I had to replace both rear quarter panels on my '70 'Cuda in '76. Years later I had an '84 Supra that had rust popping up in under 3 years! I repaired rust damage on the rear hatch twice before finally selling the car in '89.
'70 'Cuda to a '84 Supra Besides, I thought Toyota used recycled Bud-Lite cans that year? Those don't rust.
I actually traded my 'Cuda for a '77 Yamaha RD400 back in the fall of '77 right before I went in the Navy. Over the following 20+ years I had quite the eclectic group of cars.
Ha, I traded my '66 426 Street Hemi for a 1947 KnuckleHead in '82 after I got back from the Philippines with the Air Force. Figured I could ALWAYS get another 426 HEMI (back then)
I've heard about this rust issue on the older current gen Challengers, like 2009 - 2012. I wonder if once Dodge knew this was happening did they stop applying the foam on later model years?
