Very nice! I read they plan to produce 1000 units, starting price 325k US. Got me pining over my pre covid failure to pursue ownership on an affordable widebody before the pricing rose significantly.

Was there a functional reason behind the side exhaust exit on the AAR's? Did they all have it?

The 1970 AAR 'Cuda and Challenger T/A side exhaust systems are one of the more interesting exhaust systems ever devised by a manufacturer. The system made use of 2 1/4″ head pipes that went into a muffler. The interesting thing about the muffler is both the inlet and the outlet were in the front of the muffler. This allowed a 2 1/4″ tail pipe with a chrome tip to come out the muffler and hang just before the rear wheel.

They also used a staggered tire setup to make room for the side-exiting exhausts that came with big "megaphone" tips. It's interesting to note that, to avoid legal troubles, the tips left the factory in the trunk of each car and were subsequently installed by the dealerships.

My guess is that the side exhaust was more of a serviceability and heat issue. During a race, if they need to access anything in the engine compartment, the exhaust is going to be in the way of almost everything and will be adding heat to the engine bay. Keeping the exhaust as short as possible by bringing it out the sides keeps the heat to a minimum, keeps the runs short for better performance and keeps the exhaust system itself out of the way in case they'd have to do a trans swap or even axle swap during a race.

The second photo shows the side exhaust on Swede Savage's 1970 AAR Trans-Am 'Cuda.

The T/A race cars never ran a exhaust at all like the street version T/A's W/mufflers, they ran a straight pipe from each header collector to each side of the car similar to NASCAR of that era and today but normally both pipes out of the same side of today cars. And back to easy access with the street version W/stock exhaust like you have pictured above you have t to loosen the head pipes just to remove drive shaft and removing the trans you have to drop both head pipes completely. the rear leaf springs had a 2" arched rear leaf springs to raise rear of car for clearance for the chrome exhaust tips to keep from dragging on the streetcar which was only special to the T/A cars only in 1970. I have owned two of these cars and presently own one and worked on several T/As and built many six pack / six-barrel tri carb set ups and still do. the street version exhaust flowed very well, and it also had the racecar sound and looked similar to the racecar too. this is a modern challenger site, and I recommend if you are interested in this kind of car to click on this link Transamcuda.com this is correct info.

Looks like the one group overestimated just how much anyone cares about celebrity endorsements versus actual proven results.

The one thing people often unify around more than anything else is a common enemy. America finally realized just who that enemy was.
